This page provides links to small web-page utilities I have written. These are all standards-based XHTML pages using JavaScript, AJAX and PHP, so there's no need to install anything.
Look up and see characters (using graphics or fonts) and property information, view whole character blocks or custom ranges, select characters to paste into your document, paste in and discover unknown characters, search for characters, do hex/dec/ncr conversions, highlight character types, etc. etc. Check out the user guide for instructions and new features, and have fun!

Each picker carefully arranges characters in a number of ways to allow you to quickly create phrases in a script. Simply click on the characters. The phrase appears at the bottom of the screen and you can easily cut and paste the result into your own document. They're written in XHTML with a small amount of JavaScript.
Pickers are likely to be most useful if you don't know a script well enough to use the native keyboard. The arrangement of characters also makes it much more useable than a regular character map utility, and they may include characters from more than one block. New pickers are being added from time to time.
Converts between Unicode characters, Unicode code point numbers, UTF-8 and UTF-16 code units in hex, and Numeric Character References (hex and decimal), and more. Just add one type of data, click 'Convert', and see all the corresponding values.
Identifies Unicode characters in a string, shows a picture of each character and provides information about it. The output is also configurable, to allow for cut&paste of information into your document. You can type characters in the input field to the right, or send in the URI query.
Detects whether a UTF-8 encoded file on the Web begins with a UTF-8 signature or not.
Converts text to Unicode normalization forms NFD and NFC.
Check an HTML page for internationalization information, such as character encoding and language declarations (both in the document and in HTTP headers), non-normalized id and class names, request headers, etc. And discover errors, warnings and other advice about the internationalization of the page's HTML code.
Want to find the subtag for language, region, script, etc? Or find out what that tag means? Or get a list of all currently available tags? You could look in the text file on the IANA site, but this is more user friendly. It will also allow you to check language tags you are using.
This Web-based tool searches the most-up-to-date version of the registry, and provides information to help you choose between the nearly 8,000 subtags.
Vocab / language learning test app
Are you learning a language? This web app allows you to test yourself on your own vocabulary, dialogues, kanji characters, whatever. You can test in both directions, specify what information to display, and randomise the list before testing. You can also print lists for testing yourself when you don't have access to the Web.
